SIP phone
« on: February 20, 2015, 03:27:30 AM »

One of my goals is to replace a traditional phone with a low-cost and better featured VoIP phone. A little while ago, I bought this Obihai 202 ATA, an Internet phone adapter. It is way too complicated to know everything that it can do, but I like it and it is a reasonable cost. The Canadian price just went up $30 because our dollar sank so low. I paid $70CDN, plus shipping.

It has ports for two real phones or a FAX machine, plus four program slots for different services, which can be configured in ways that I can't even imagine.

If you are looking for an Internet phone device, I would suggest looking at this one first. It comes with Google Voice already to go for making calls, but if you want to receive calls, then you will need some sort of SIP/DID service, too. I started with CallWithUs, which also covers Canada. And, as is typical, calls between Obihai devices are all free, too.
