After a week layoff; spent about 45 minutes and got my goal of 2:20's ... now I'm curious as to whether I have a 19 in me. The only other Tuna I can see ahead of me is Fried by .340 ... any others here at 17's - 19's?

Wizard is in the 18's.

Wiz, now you gotta beat Gojet again because he just slipped past ya ;)

me, I'm still struggling to get into the 19's.  It's a consistency issue really, as I may pass mr. ghost at one point, then lose in at another.

I may have to put in more hours than the rest of you, but I WILL get higher if I stick with it.

For me it's really starting to be an issue of discovery and curiosity.

I ask...

"What is this person doing that I'm not doing?"
"What have they figured out that I haven't?"
"what do I need to do differently?"

I just can't stand the feeling of standing still so I definitely want to improve over my 424th position from last year.  I'm close, but there's still a lot of time left for others to move up too...

Not everyone's driving style is the same, but there is one constant...the car.  Roughly a year ago I went from being awful at GT5 to being merely average because of one change I made--I accepted the characteristics of the car I was driving instead of trying to force the way I drove onto the car.  I used to drive everything the same and I hated shitty cars.  Instead of being mad because a '69 Camaro didn't handle like a C6 Corvette, I eventually accepted the fact that I had to slow sooner for corners.

Same thing with this GT Academy thing.  The car is going to slide, drift and spin.  Once you accept that and work with it, I think your times will improve.

thanks for the advice, but I'm torn about turning it off because a lot of times I would think I've actually passed it and turn it back on to realize I'm way behind my former self... but I know there are psychological advantages to turning it off.

Maybe I will do more of that.  But I'm still not always aware of exactly how fast I've taken a corner without some sort of reference point.

So far, going against my own ghost has been more useful than chasing the leader's, since after two corners he's a second faster already!

I really wish we could easily pick a ghost of any racer and chase it.

I think there'd be more value in chasing a ghost of someone around 1-2 seconds faster than me and then once beating that, picking one of the very top leaders'.

I should clarify....  I rarely use my own ghost.  To me it's nothing but frustration.  If I get a little behind, the temptation is too high to quit the lap and start over, which is usually what I'll do.  Which then leads to not learning the 2nd half of the track as good as the first.  And if I'm ahead of my ghost, I can start to feel my muscles tighten up with anxiety and I usually end up fucking up the lap somehow.

If I do turn on a ghost, I'll use a slightly faster ghost than my own.  I seem to do ok if I'm chasing a faster ghost.  I pretend like I'm racing him and focus solely on the ghost and nothing else.  I find it helps me focus less on braking points, entry points, throttle, braking, etc. and basically just drive on instinct.  I also find that I'll finish a lap, because if I fall behind, I know I'm slower anyway so who cares... keep going and see what happens.

I do agree though that the use of ghosts is highly subjective.

In the end, it may not even matter.  I think once we're close to our limits, ghost or no ghost probably doesn't make much difference.

I remember being bummed about this last year so this year I got smart.  Right at the beginning of the competition I made sure to download some of the top guys ghosts back when they were in the high 17's / low 18's.  Right now I'm chasing a ghost I saved on day 2 of 2:18.380.  I can hang with it until Maggotts/Becketts, then he pulls away.

I wish we could export/import ghosts.   :P

I would if I could.  Unfortunately, the export feature is inactive in the demo.
