Actually, I lied.  With both Michigan teams playing in the NCAA tournament on Friday night, I probably won't be racing at all.

I'll hold the 370Z @ Blackwood for the following week.

Even the GT5 course designer is able to handle this simple task of auto generating the backgrounds and road textures.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this.  I don't think that's how the GT5 course maker works.

So it's been done before.

We'll just have to agree to disagree here I think as well.

Well I don't claim to know much about this stuff. If you say it can't be done, or that it's extremely hard, I'll have to take your word for it. Sounds like you've done more of the modeling than I have. As a software engineer, it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to designate polygons as either road surface, background / grass and background / sky. But if you say it's hard, I'll believe you. To me, the only really hard bit would be translating GPS numbers into the actual polygons. That bit might actually be very hard, especially when you consider that the road surface will be changing elevation and camber all the time. Having the background match up ... yeah, that'd be something. But still, I think it's certainly doable by someone. I bet we see this technology soon.

I'll hold the 370Z @ Blackwood for the following week.

I'm reading that Blackwood has some issues online.  I'll probably switch the track to Mid-Ohio.  If someone has another suggestion for a track I'm all ears.

What issues does blackwood have?  I actually know that track.

I read that some folks have really shitty framerates and there was another that had problems with pitting.

One other guy said he had no problems at all running a server with this track.

I'm just being extremely cautious about which tracks to pick if it's going to be a public lobby.  I'd hate to be the guy that puts together an event that doesn't work.

That said, if some of us here could get together before next Friday and test this track ourselves, I'd be happy to run it if it works.  It's a nice track.

Pretty cool stuff.  The lmp mod is open source.  Apparently he started it in Blender (a free open source 3D modelling program) but I'm not sure that he finished it in blender.  I've been meaning to play around with Blender for a while.  I may check this out.

I downloaded it a month or so ago and played around with it a bit.  The only thing I learned is that I'm way too stupid to use it.

Blender is pretty intimidating at first.  A long time ago I did some of the simple tutorials (made gingerbread man).  And managed to make a simple 3D model and an animation for a powerpoint presentation.  It was enough to impress the people watching the animation but was pretty rudimentary otherwise.

Are you still doing this event this Friday?

I wasn't able to test Blackwood so to be safe I'm going with Mid-Ohio.  rfMod can be downloaded Here
