Valve and HTC have a consumer release VR headset coming out for the holidays.  I haven't delved into the details of the headset but the 3D motion tracking that they are using looks awesome.  Not only will it track your headset but it will also track controllers as well as scan your room.  It opens up the possibility of placing markers on your wheel so that your real wheel can be positioned correctly in the virtual world.  they are giving developer kits away for free so I'm going to try my best to get one.

One of the limitations of the rift is the 90 degree fov.  that is not likely to change a great deal with the consumer release.  so monitors could give you more peripheral vision but in no way would I call it more natural.  It is really hard to explain the presence you get with the rift because it is unlike anything else.  It is miles better than even a 3D movie.  Really, I can't recall if the car moves around you in response to bumps or just the outside world but it feels completely natural.  Put it this way, I find it much easier to save a spin with the rift because you can detect the slide much quicker with the rift on.  I find that when going from a monitor to the rift, I can quickly adapt because you can use all the additional speed and depth cues.  It's like driving in real life.  When I go back to a monitor after the rift for a while, I have to relearn how to determine where to break and I end up going off the track all the time.

I will be out for a bit. My timing might be sketchy though as I have spent my day putting a roof an outbuilding at my father in law's and my wife might be headed to dentist this evening with a broken tooth, which leave the boys in my charge. So as I said I will be out just not sure quite when yet.

Wizard and I decided to try our hand at mod cars for AC.  We started with the radical and have maybe 1 or 2 more planned.  Wiz did all the model/skins work and I did all the physics files.  All in all, we both have put a large amount of time into learning how how this crap works, but alas, we did.  :)

Here is what we came up with for our first car...

I asked on the official forum if that was the fix, but haven't got an answer yet.
