Lewis Hamilton plans to break from tradition next season and retain the number 44 on his Mercedes, rather than adopt number one for his title defence.
At the start of the 2014 season F1 drivers picked numbers to remain with them for the remainder of their careers, with Hamilton choosing the number 44 with which he won his first karting title. Sebastian Vettel picked number five at the start of the year but drove with number one on his Red Bull because he was the defending champion, with regulations stating he will switch to his career choice next season at Ferrari.
But newly-crowned 2014 world champion Hamilton, who has the number 44 tattooed behind his right ear, says his current choice means more to him.
"Forty-four has always been my number, ever since I started [racing]," Hamilton said. "I won my first championship on number 44. I'm going to work very hard to ask the team if I can keep 44 on my car next year. Number one is a great thing but I will always know I'm number one. Forty-four is my favourite number so I want to keep it on the car."
Other motor racing championships, such as Moto GP and IndyCar, often have competitors sticking with their career number when defending a championship. Hamilton says he would not need a change of number on his car for other drivers to know he's the defending champion.
"It doesn't make any difference. I'll still be 44 but underlying that the drivers will know I'm number one."

A lot has been made about Ferrari's resurgence but they are still only good enough to beat a Mercedes if Mercedes make a mistake.  Mercedes should have been pushing more in the middle stint when Kimi was on the harder tire.   They were too preoccupied with Vettel that they didn't realize that Kimi was going to be not too far behind and on faster tires for the final stint.  Even then Kimi still needed a Mercedes mistake (or car issue) to get ahead.  This season has the makings of being worse than last season because Hamilton is driving much better than Rosberg and driving the best car.  At least we have sparks flying and the Red Bull cars are equipped with smoke screens.

Mercedes should have kept Ross Brawn. Their slow demise is showing up sooner than expected. Ferrari have actual pace and are a serious threat. When Renault get their shit together (piston problems, cure is 6 weeks out. so maybe by Canada) Ricciardo can challenge too. Very small chance, but possible Honda can get sorted this season.

Some how I doubt Honda will be any where but the back for at least this year and probably next.  I can't help but be reminded of Toyota, Ford/Cosworth/Jaguar/whatever, and Mercedes first years back in F1 with a factory effort.  They were usually off pace and only Mercedes were able to vastly improve.

The difference is that McLaren are an established team with plenty of experience designing and building a competitive car. When Honda manages to get the PU issues sorted McLaren Honda will be in the mix.

It's a similar situation @ RBR presently, with Renault.

Monaco is unique in that Friday is Qualifying and Saturday is a rest and recovery day from partying. Then race on Sunday. 

Sorry I was wrong. They have Free practice on Thursday instead of Friday. That is all. Qualifying is tomorrow.
