They reworked the drift scoring as of 2-3 drift trials ago, and it makes no sense at all. While it was flawed before, it seems to be so random now, I almost don't want to fool with them anymore.  :(

I have tried to drift.  I have failed epically.

Do most drifters use the controller like you Chrome?  And, what car would you choose for a person who needs drift lessons/first timers.  I can't do it with a wheel but may try the sticks.  I'm letting free credits go down the drain.

So I finally got around to giving the latest round of seasonals a quick "One and Done" before they expired, wall 'o text incoming but the condensed version is:  +1 for improving AI but still room for improvement!


The 500 and 550PP ones I did with the old '98 Mercedes SL500 that had just some basic upgrades and was about 15-20PP under spec each time (seemed more than adequate to win without issue).  The 600PP one I did with a very slightly upgraded '13 Dodge / SRT Viper (stage 1 weight, shorter fixed trans, racing exhaust was all I think I did to it), didn't have much trouble getting to the front of the pack but I did have to fend off a McLaren F1 for 2-3 laps.

Generally I like the improvement in the AI, it seems to battle more than it used to and be a bit more fun to race with but I'm not sure I really like the way the rubber-band / keep up thing works.  Don't get me wrong I like that it provides a bit more of a challenge but it feels very artificial and unrealistic, case in point was the 600PP seasonal I did with the Viper.  Took 1st place pretty easily midway through lap 2 making up a 30 second or so deficit, after taking the front spot the AI suddenly becomes "good" and puts up a fight so the last 2 and a half laps are much more intense but it felt like a fake battle challenge.

The problem is still the "Chase the rabbit" beginning to each race, while the AI generally seems better and the rubber band stops you getting too far ahead like before having the front running AI suddenly start keeping up with you after you're apparently running 10-20 seconds a lap faster than they are for the first half a race destroys that sense of immersion.

Given the improvements to the AI I think a better solution would be to have all the cars much closer together (as in all cars on / very close to the main straight) when starting the race and hit the gas as soon as the car in 1st crosses the line to make it much more like a realistic rolling start, with the cars closer together from the get go I think it would feel like a much more fluid and dynamic challenge (and a lot less fake, even with the AI getting a boost to keep up when you pass them).

I've looked at a few other DT participants, and see a pretty good mix of wheel and stick users.

I think something in the 350-450hp range is a good place to start, but really you can go much lower, and still drift quite well, it's just more work to maintain it. As far as anything else, setup wise, it's much of the same characteristics you'd want in a race car. Well balanced, and predictable. I've commonly used cars that I've raced, to drift with, and change nothing but the tires.

Edit: Try the Chevy IROC Concept, with just a few bolt ons, and CH tires. That is one of the smoothest, and easily drifted cars I've used in this game.

now that seems like a very good idea for mitigating the various factors that make the races less fun for some.  the AI isn't good enough to not have a rolling start and still provide a challenge to get 1st by the end of the final lap (with similar cars, that is).  So, this might be the best way??

I've tried them and at this point in time I do not have enough interest to bother much more with them. However if I were to attempt to gold them all I would be spending a lot of time on them and watching some youboob gold videos.

The biggest issue I have with "chasing the rabbit" for events (and this holds true for GT5 as well) is that the PP level of the field varies too much.  I would like to have a fairly close race with all the cars in the event, but you need to line up your PP level with the 2-3 cars up front.  That means you're not even racing the other cars - they're really just course obstacles and it takes away a lot of enjoyment.  It was particularly bad in GT5 enduros.  Why the heck did the computer stick R32 Touring cars in a race with LMP race cars?!

I don't like those kinds of cars anyway, they're just too damn touchy, and fast. I'm within a second of silver after 3-4 laps. I just don't care enough to try for gold. Probably can't get it anyway.  :P

On another note I haven't been able to articulate what I want to say about the drift trials yet.

All I can determine about the optimal scoring zone is, it's very, very narrow. Speed and angle still seem to not factor into the score, unless you get really sideways, which makes the score stop all together. Extreme angle is very maintainable, but the game thinks you're about to spin out, so no score. 

The 1th sector at Brands I'm getting scores from 700+ to 4000+ with runs that look, and feel near identical. The scoring is just all over the place.

Also, the Aston Martin VGT is eligible for the DT at Tsukuba, so I used it. Even with the non-adjustable LSD, and no torque splitter, it was a drifting machine.
